The miracle of magnesium

MAGNESIUM is life>  It is the fourth most abundant mineral in the body.  Along with being a mineral. magnesium is also an electrolyte.   Electrolytes are what allow us to be living electrical beings. They are responsible for all electrical activity and brain conductivity in the body.  Without electrolytes like magnesium muscles fail to fire, your heart cannot beat and your brain does not receive any signals.  Magnesium is needed to stay alive.

Recent research on both sides of the Atlantic has shed new light on the biological importance of magnesium.  Over 70% of the body’s

magnesium is found in bones, combined with calcium and phosphorous.  The rest is found in soft tissue, muscles, nerves and bodily fluids.  Magnesium is responsible for – the production and transfer of energy, muscular contractions, the synthesis of proteins, triggering nerve cells.  Good sources are cocoa, chocolate, whole grains, whole grain rice, whole grain bread, nuts, dried legumes, peas, lentils

SYMPTOMS OF A MAGNESIUM DEFICIENCY.

Deficiencies occur frequently, especially among people on weight-loss programmes.  Foods rich in magnesium are also often rich in calories.  Magnesium deficiency is also common in pregnant or breast-feeding women, alcoholics, diabetics, hyperthyroidism, pancreatitis.

Signs of a deficiency are:-

General fatigue – cramps, nervousness, muscle pain, anxiety, palpitations.

As soon as we become deficient in this mineral we start to lose energy, we get more unexplained aches and pains.   Magnesium is responsible for over three hundred reactions in the body.  The Weston A. Price Foundation writes “Magnesium alone can fulfil the role of many cardiac medications, it inhibits blood clots (like aspirin) thins the blood (like warfarin) relaxes blood vessels.

Anything that makes you tense and tight could be due to a magnesium lack, therefore if you suffer high levels of stress you will be depleting your stores of magnesium,  “Do you crave chocolate?  Why, when people are stressed out they often reach for a chocolate fix.
